FeatureDetails
ModeComputer-based test (CBT)
Questions100 multiple-choice questions
Marks100 (1 mark each)
Duration100 minutes
Negative marking0.25 mark per wrong answer
LanguageEnglish only

One minute per question is tight but fair. Speed comes from practice, so mock tests matter as much as reading.

Qualifying marks

  • General and EWS: 40 marks (40%)
  • SC, ST and OBC: 35 marks (35%)
  • Reserved-category candidates competing for unreserved posts need 40%

How selection works

The CBT is the only selection stage; there is no interview for this Group B post. Based on CBT marks, PGIMER shortlists about three candidates per post for document scrutiny.

If two candidates score the same, the advertisement breaks the tie in this order: fewer wrong answers, then older date of birth, then higher 10+2 marks, then higher Class 10 marks.

Note: the first tie-breaker is fewer wrong answers. Careless guessing can cost you a rank even when your total is the same as someone else’s.

What to study

PGIMER does not publish subject-wise marks for this exam. Questions are based on the nursing subjects you studied in B.Sc or GNM. Focus your revision on these:

  • Medical Surgical Nursing (the largest subject for most nursing officer exams)
  • Fundamentals of Nursing and nursing procedures
  • Obstetrics and Midwifery
  • Child Health (Paediatric) Nursing
  • Mental Health Nursing
  • Community Health Nursing and national health programmes
  • Anatomy, Physiology, Microbiology, Pharmacology and Nutrition

4-week revision plan before 18 November

This plan starts on 21 October and leaves the last week for mocks and light revision. Move days around to fit your shifts, but keep the order: big subjects first, practice last.

WeekDatesFocusPractice
121–27 OctMedical Surgical Nursing (all systems) and Fundamentals50 MCQs a day; one sectional test on Sunday
228 Oct–3 NovObstetrics, Child Health and Mental Health Nursing50 MCQs a day; first full mock on Sunday
34–10 NovCommunity Health, Pharmacology, Anatomy, Physiology, Microbiology, NutritionTwo full mocks; review every wrong answer
411–17 NovRevise weak topics and short notes only; no new chaptersOne mock every other day; rest on 17 Nov

Daily routine: working nurses vs full-time students

  • Working nurses (2–3 hours): one hour of reading before or after duty, 50 MCQs in the evening, 15 minutes of revision before sleep. Use off days for mocks.
  • Full-time students (6–7 hours): two reading blocks in the morning, MCQs after lunch, a sectional test in the evening and a short recap at night.

Keep one notebook only for mistakes. In week 4, that notebook becomes your main revision material.

Handling negative marking

Each wrong answer costs 0.25 marks. With four options, a pure blind guess still has a slightly positive average value, but it is a gamble. Remember that fewer wrong answers is also the first tie-breaker.

  • Answer confidently when you know it.
  • Attempt when you can rule out at least one or two options.
  • Skip questions where you have no clue, and move on quickly.
  • Practise this rule in every mock so it feels natural on exam day.

Exam-day checklist

  • Printed admit card and a valid original photo ID
  • Reach the centre well before the reporting time on the admit card
  • Read every instruction on the admit card about items not allowed
  • Eat a light meal before the afternoon shift and carry water if allowed
  • In the exam, do one quick round of easy questions first, then return to the harder ones
