The Indian Nursing Council (INC) has asked nursing institutions to observe Kayakalp Day on 27 October 2026, a dedicated one-day activity on sanitation and hygiene. The request came in Notification No. 20 of 2026, dated 19 October 2026, under Special Campaign 6.
That gives colleges about a week to plan. This guide explains what Kayakalp Day involves, what the Kayakalp scheme is, why INC linked it to Special Campaign 6.0, and gives you a ready plan and checklist you can adapt.

What is Kayakalp?
Kayakalp is a national initiative of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, launched on 15 May 2015. It grew out of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan and rewards public health facilities that keep high standards of cleanliness, hygiene and infection control.
According to the revised Kayakalp scheme (2024) published by NHSRC, its aims are to:
- promote cleanliness, hygiene and infection control practices
- recognise and reward facilities that perform well
- build a culture of regular assessment and peer review
- share good practices that keep facilities clean over time
The themes Kayakalp checks
Facilities are scored on these thematic areas:
- Hospital or facility upkeep
- Sanitation and hygiene
- Waste management
- Infection prevention and control
- Support services
- Hygiene promotion beyond the hospital boundary
- Eco-friendly facility (added in the 2024 revision)
How facilities are assessed
- Internal assessment: the facility checks itself every quarter and makes an improvement plan.
- Peer assessment: a team from another facility in the district reviews it at least once a year.
- External assessment: facilities scoring 70% or more in peer review are checked by an external team. A score of 70% or above makes them eligible for awards or commendation.
Kayakalp covers government facilities from district hospitals down to sub-centres. Nursing colleges are not scored under it, but the same standards apply to the wards where your students train.
What is Special Campaign 6.0?
Special Campaign 6.0 is run by the Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances (DARPG). It runs from 2 October to 31 October 2026 across government offices. The campaign focuses on cleanliness, clearing pending work, weeding out old records and, this year, proper disposal of e-waste.
INC’s Kayakalp Day brings this campaign into nursing institutions, with a focus that suits health education: sanitation, hygiene and infection control.
Why this matters for nursing colleges
Nurses are often the people who keep hygiene standards alive on a ward. Hand hygiene, waste segregation and cleaning routines are daily nursing work, not extra tasks.
A well-run Kayakalp Day turns these topics from textbook chapters into habits. It also prepares students for community postings at PHCs and sub-centres, which are assessed under Kayakalp.
A ready Kayakalp Day plan
Here is a sample Kayakalp Day schedule. Adjust timings to your college hours and the size of your student body.
